We have expanded not only our clinical space but also our expert team. Audiologist Vikki Sahdra will be joining our well known audiologist Kevin Jeffery and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the clinic. With her passion for helping patients reconnect with their family and friends, Vikki will play a crucial role in expanding the range of services offered at our Marlow clinic.
Audiology is a subject which is close to home for Vikki, as her mother was diagnosed with severe hearing loss from an early age. Attending appointments with her and understanding her frustration with her hearing is what lead Vikki down this career path. She feels that reconnecting people with their family and friends and assisting them with something that impacts their daily lives makes her role really special.

Inclusion For Those With Hearing Loss
The importance of good hearing often goes unnoticed, much like our other senses, until we lose it. Help in Hearing recognise the significance of effective communication and socialising with loved ones. However, what happens when communication consistently becomes challenging? Our team of highly qualified audiologists witnesses the impact of limited social interaction on mental well-being, faced by 1 in 6 individuals in the UK due to hearing loss daily.
According to the World Health Organisation, this number is projected to increase to 1 in 4 by 2050. Extensive research highlights the importance of good hearing, with evidence linking untreated hearing loss to an increased risk of dementia, if you would like to read more about this, please click here to read our article.
Hearing aids serve as powerful tools for improving communication, by amplifying sounds and enhancing speech clarity, they enable individuals to actively engage in conversations, follow along in group settings, and participate in social activities. This newfound ability to communicate effectively helps individuals build stronger relationships, connect with others, and feel more included within their communities.
Arrange a comprehensive hearing health assessment with one of our expert audiologists. With multiple clinics conveniently located, access to our services is easy. Our comprehensive hearing health assessments evaluate hearing and general ear health. At Help in Hearing, we believe hearing loss shouldn’t diminish quality of life. We provide tailored services, ensuring the best care.

Spotlight on….Kinga Silver, our Patient Care Co-ordinator in Henley
Spotlight on....
Kinga Silver, the Patient Care Coordinator at Help in Hearing Henley absolutely loves her job! Her own personal journey led her to working in the hearing industry and she thrives on looking after our clients, completely understanding what it is like to have hearing loss. Although it is very painful for her to reflect on what happened, Kinga decided to share her story with our Practice Manager Gilly, in the hope that it will help some of our clients.
From a young age, Kinga has had a moderate to severe loss in her right ear. The hearing in her left ear was so “good” it was able to compensate for the loss in her right ear. When she was around 35, a friend noticed that Kinga was missing out on some conversation. Indeed, a subsequent test revealed that the hearing in her “good” left ear had dropped a little, so she tried an NHS hearing aid for a while, but she says she found it uncomfortable and difficult to get used to.
Sudden hearing loss
In December 2014 while she was watching TV, Kinga became aware of an invasive buzzing noise in her left ear. She thought she was tired and struggling with the start of a cold, so she went to bed. Alarmingly when she woke up the next morning, she had zero hearing in her left ear. She was understandably very scared. Her GP said it was just catarrh and possibly an infection, so she was given antibiotics and he suggested it would settle down in a couple of days.
However, after 48 hours, the tinnitus was so loud that she begged her husband to call the GP again, as she couldn’t hear to speak to him.
Kinga was referred to ENT eleven days after the onset of her sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). The protocol today for SSHL is immediate referral to A&E who then refer the patient as an emergency to ENT. We have helped several clients with this process, as you may be aware from previous articles, and Wendy Davies, our senior audiologist in Farnham Common, had personal experience of how well the emergency system works. Wendy was prescribed with steroids immediately and her hearing was restored. However, because of the delay in treatments this was not the case for Kinga. Her consultant declared that her hearing was lost and that she would need bilateral hearing aids.
Impossible to Work
For Kinga and her family, that Christmas was a write off. She explains:
“I couldn’t understand why it had happened to me; I was only 41. Trying to get my head round my loss was just awful. Nobody understood. I could not get over the fact that my hearing was not coming back. I felt so isolated and didn’t want to join in the festivities. I was angry and wanted to blame someone”.
She added: “The NHS aids were big and ugly, and the sound offered very poor speech clarity.” She worked in financial services and although her employers were very supportive, they didn’t have the telephony technology to help her communicate, which really knocked her confidence further. She says: “I found it exhausting and stressful. All I wanted to do was withdraw and hide away. I wanted to completely shut myself off, even from my husband and my two girls. The tinnitus was unbearable, and I felt like I was going crazy.”
For many people, losing your hearing is an emotional journey of acceptance and can be compared to a bereavement. At this point, Kinga was referred to a counsellor and she slowly began to find herself again. Bravely she decided to get on with her life. She worked at a pre-school for a couple of hours a week and although she found it hard when the children mumbled and then shouted at her, this helped her to see life differently. She wanted to become the woman she used to be, someone who was previously confident and outgoing. “I was thrown a curve ball in life and in the end, I knew I had to pick myself up and carry on!”
Patients can relate to me
In April 2016 she booked to see a private audiologist who gave her the time she needed to discuss her hearing journey and what would work for her. When she realised that help was out there, she was inspired to support others. She comments:
“I am really driven at work to help people. I have been through it, so our patients can relate to me. They are surprised when they realise I am deaf, so I am a good example of how well aids can work and that you don’t need to miss out on life!”
She continues: “I am also very interested in the technology as it works so well for me. I like to know about new aids being introduced and what they might mean for me and for our clients. Having been so low, I now feel lucky – eventually I was looked after, so I want to give something back”.
She has been working for Help in Hearing Henley (previously known at The Hearing Clinic Henley) for five years as their Patient Care Coordinator. Her hearing aids are not only comfortable and discreet, but they also offer sophisticated sound and speech discrimination. She takes all phone calls at the practice via a phone clip so she can answer the phone confidently.
She explains: “I love talking and listening to clients. It is so rewarding to be part of a team like this that makes a difference.”
We are delighted that Kinga is part of our team as she is like a breath of fresh air. Recently nominated for a “go the extra mile” award, she is bubbly, confident, kind and empathetic – exactly what our clients need at “front of house”. We are so glad she decided to turn the experience on its head and “give back” to help others.
If you or your family and friends ever experience sudden hearing loss as Kinga did, please remember to call us immediately for advice. We will offer you an emergency appointment to assess what the problem is and then refer you on if necessary. Our audiologists are highly trained and experienced, so who better to see for a professional opinion on your hearing requirements? Call 01494 57755 to speak to Kinga in Henley or 0345 2220579 to speak to Natalya in Farnham Common & Marlow.

Radio legend thanks Help in Hearing for changing his life
We recently featured in Buckinghamshire Live, you can read the full article below:
Broadcaster and DJ Nicky Horne is part of radio folklore, having presented regular radio shows on Capital, Virgin, Jazz, Magic, TalkSport, and Classic FM.
In fact, he has the unique honour of being the only presenter to have had regular shows on every single national commercial station as well as BBC Radio 1 and 2.
Over the years, he has met and interviewed the likes of Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, David Gilmour, David Bowie, Pete Townshend, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Wilson and Elton John to name but a few.
But 10 years ago, Nicky was dismayed to realise that he was beginning to lose his hearing.
He explained: “I was having trouble hearing conversations in restaurants and had great difficulty with TV sound and hearing my wife talking to me.
“More importantly I became aware that my hearing loss was starting to intrude significantly on my work.
“Many of my colleagues were younger than me and because I couldn’t hear, I began to feel I had to prove myself.
“It was really sapping my confidence. I felt there was so much stigma around hearing aids – in my mind, they really weren’t part of the rock and roll image.
“Nevertheless, it still took me another three years or so to find the courage to do anything about it.”
Phenomenal attention to detail
Luckily, a friend recommended Help in Hearing – a local independent, hearing healthcare practice based in Farnham Common, Henley-on-Thames and Marlow.
With 50 years of combined experience, its friendly but highly professional approach has earned it long-term client relationships built on trust, reliability and continuity of care.
Nicky enthused: “From the moment I met my audiologist I never looked back, she was so patient, and I was given a truly personal service.
“The sound booth was superior and the attention to detail was phenomenal, with so much time spent getting the sound exactly right.
“She truly understood the importance of music in my life and that if my hearing had continued to deteriorate, it would have been a really big problem.”
Don’t struggle any longer
Nicky, who presents a daily show on Boom Radio and is the lead presenter on the Now Rock TV channel, said the first time he tried hearing aids was a revelation.
He smiled: “Sound has always been my work – it’s so important to me. I am used to listening to the tiny nuances.
“I remember the first day I had the hearing aids, I went for an evening walk in the woods near my house and the sound of birdsong was extraordinary.
“I don’t look on them as hearing aids – they simply enhance my hearing and they have fundamentally changed my daily life.
“So don’t put it off, don’t be embarrassed, don’t struggle any longer. Visit Help in Hearing and get the help you deserve.”

Special feature: Summer Holiday Tips
With the summer months approaching, our thoughts go to holidays here and abroad, spending time in the garden and if the weather holds maybe some outdoor theatre and concerts. That means it is also time to think about our summer hearing health. Here are some of our summer hearing health tips.
Holidays
Your hearing aid accessories are vital parts of your holiday packing list so do check a week or so before that you have enough batteries and domes for your trip. It’s a good idea to change the wax guards too before you set off – please contact us for an appointment if you would like us to service your hearing aids before your holiday.
If you are travelling to a country with high humidity, we would recommend investing in a hearing aid dehumidifier. These small pots use a dessicant to draw any moisture from the hearing aid overnight.
Swimming
When the weather is hot, a dip in a swimming pool is just the way to cool off, but do take some precautions against developing a case of Swimmer’s Ear. All water contains bacteria but there are higher levels in untreated water such as river and sea water. When water containing bacteria gets trapped in the ear, it is in the right environment – a nice warm ear canal – and the bacteria start to multiply and this may lead to an infection in the skin within the ear casing inflammation, which can become very painful.
Follow these recommendations to reduce the risk of Swimmer’s Ear:
1. Use a swimming cap or ear plugs to minimise the amount of water going into your ears.
2. Dry ears thoroughly after swimming. If you feel you have any water trapped in your ear canal, lean your head over towards your shoulder, jiggle your ear lobe and gravity should do the rest, allowing the water to drain out. Never use cotton buds to try and mop up any water.
3. Do not try and remove any ear wax other than wiping it away from the entrance of your ear canal with a flannel or tissue. Again, never use cotton buds to remove ear wax. If you feel that you have a build-up of wax, please make an appointment to see us so that we can safely remove it.
Managing Noise
It is good hearing health to protect our ears from excessive noise. Noise protection applies to all the family, not just those wearing hearing aids and not just the obvious times such as loud concerts or sporting events, but also when using electrical tools such as lawnmowers and DIY power tools. Help In Hearing can provide inexpensive over-the-counter noise plugs – please contact us for more details.
Social Events
Summer is the time for meeting with friends and family and barbecues and parties. Your family will be delighted that you are taking care of your hearing health by wearing your hearing aids, so if you have not worn your aids for a while, it’s time to get them out again. Do make an appointment with us for a clean and service if required.
